To keep my males is good show condition they were kept in show pens made of whiteboard-like material. It was soft to stop breakage, there were no females to step on the feathers, or pick on his feathers. And lastly they were raised on fresh shavings from the time they were growing in new feathers. So after they molted I put them into a show pen to condition them. They can permenany damage a feather withing one week of starting to grow new feathers so it's good to start soon after the molt. The poop on the tail can be washed out , let it soak in hot water for a while then wipe it out. Be careful as not to break the feather trying to wipe the poop off, as I've done it before.
