How to keep chicks from roosting on the waterer?

I put one of those large coffee cans upside down over the top of it. Works great!

Mine used to roost and poo in the water ALL the time! And now they don't

I'll see if I can find a large enough funnel. Maybe at an auto parts store? We don't have it hanging. I bought this waterer to use until we get the nipple waterer going and this one will be the outside one so right now I just have it on bricks. We will be hanging the other one but dh is pretty busy with farming right now and doesn't have time to get the beam put in to hang it from. I just need something that will work for now until he gets done with all his field work.

I'll also check what cans we have. DH drinks coffee that comes in a plastic pouch thing. lol. Wouldn't they still roost on the top of the can though? Since it's flat? That does give me an idea though. Glue a funnel to a can that will fit easily over the top and it won't fall off or get knocked off.

I just made a cardboard cone and taped it on. I figured it was a temporary problem and only a temporary solution was needed. It worked great!

Cut the bottom off a milk jug, slide it on top of waterer. Presto, no more perching and pooping.

They have a regular roost but so far only a few of them get on it. They are almost 7 weeks old so they aren't following the rules yet.

thanks everyone. I have an empty milk jug around here so I'll start with that.
