Anybody have any ideas/suggestions on keeping flies away from my chicken coop? l keep the roost/nest boxes pretty clean, but every time I leave a watermelon rind or cantaloupe, they go swarming. Any ideas would be appreciated!

thanks!!

I'd also love to hear some suggestions. Now that the weather has warmed up, the run area is covered in flies!

I've seen some folks suggest those car air fresheners, but I haven't heard of much success with those, especially in the run.

yeah, I was thinking about fly ribbons or fly strips, but I was afraid that the chickens themselves might get caught in them....

Someone told me if you take a zip-lock baggie, put a few pennies in it, fill it full of water and hang them up somewhere, the flies will stay away. Apparently the light messes with the flies many eyes. And well, if that doesn't work at least your chickens will have a nice disco party...

Your chickens will eat the maggots, and maybe the fly eggs.., even if they aren't chasing the adult flies. I have had good results with the fly predators from Spalding; they get stable flies. I tell myself that flies laying eggs in the coop aren't adding to the population, because their nasty little maggots won't survive... Mary

Rescue brand fly traps are the only ones that work! I put a few up and started cleaning up the poo daily and the fly problem has disappeared! I swear there must be thousands of flys in the traps in a few days
