How to keep my chickens combs from freezing?

haha I thought of making a crocheted little hat for my two roosters when a neighbor told me that the combs would freeze and fall off. WHAT!!!! How awful. I mentioned to another friend about putting Vaseline or bag balm on the combs and waddles and they said it wouldn't help. It got down below 0 the last two nights and now they have black tips. It may be too late but I'm going to do it tonight anyway. If it's too late for rooster hats this year I'll definitely have them for next year. I'll let you know what happens. Poor little guys.

I don't have vasaline on hand. I have lard, coconut oil, butter. Will any of these work?
