How to keep my Rooster at home

I have a rooster that is about 4 years old. I only let my chickens free range when I am home so that my GSD can keep a watchful eye on them. My neighbor just acquired 2 hens. My rooster has been sneaking over to visit the hens in my neighbors yard every day. Can I discourage him from wondering to the neighbors house?

Does he have any hens where he lives? If not, you'd have to cage him. Chickens are social animals and need their own kind, generally speaking, it's a rare chook that's happy all by itself.

Best wishes.

He has 3 hens to himself. I hate to keep him penned up all of the time. They have been able to run free for years, but always stayed right with us or the dogs. He is leaving his hens to go visit neighbors hens.

Well, I'd guess your neighbor needs to get a rooster too, but then they will fight.

Either way, it sounds like your rooster's trying to reconcile the two groups of hens into one flock. You may want to discuss with your neighbor whether they're okay with your boy visiting their hens. Otherwise, fencing or penning would be about your only hope.

Best wishes.
