It was pretty hot out today and the ducks were just playing follow the shadows (they do have plenty of them) and panting a little. Not really distressed, but not having much fun.

So since I was cleaning out their pools (4 kiddie pools and a deep stock tank - spoiled rotten brats!)

I decided to dump our ice bin in the pool. They are the crescent ice cubes and have pretty round edges so I thought they wouldn't cause too many problems. Once they were small enough to go down, they would just get smaller. I watched them very closely and didn't see any problems and they sure were excited

The only issue was our pekin is a bit bigger than the rest and I think she was able to swallow them while they were bigger and got a little case of crop freeze

She had fun with the rest of them... She just paused a second and did a kind of "huh - huh", then was fine

How funny, you mean it actually gets hot in Montana?

Just for a couple hours... With low humidity and very little cloud cover a day to night swing of 40-50 degrees isn't unusual and 30-something is normal so we can still have lows in the mid 40s.For example today's forcast (we just had a rain so it is cooler and relatively humid) shows 72/46. That is for the airport in town where streets and buildings tend to hold and moderate heat. Out here I would expect 77/41 for the day and the high changes more than the low day to day. For example that day I think the low was around 50. I can remember living places that 95 day meant 85 night and you needed AC to sleep. Here once the sun goes down it cools off pretty quick we can usually open windows at night.

Same here living in the mountains of western NC we get lows into low to mid 50's even in summer can even drop into 40's, highs can get into 90's but not often, we've never had air conditioning here. good thing our flocks are flexible us too.

Southeast Virginia is always hot and humid in the summer. Lows are often still in 80's :( AC has been on since early May......
On the plus side, winter is usually above freezing, except at night :) (this past winter being unusually cold and snowy for us)
