How to kill male chicks

The zoo or reptile place may want them alive.... that option is probably almost as quick as some of the others... for co2 you need a whole proper set up... car exauhst would be bad for anything to eat it. Personally, I would find someone who wants to raise for meat, so it's life goes further in terms of feeding someone/thing... maybe a low income family would be interested.

Cutting the head off completely with SHARP scissors in one stroke over a container is the best, quickest, most humane way to cull baby chicks, IMO. It is not as messy as you might think.

Edited to add: freezing alive is extremely painful, and while we don't know if gassing is painful, it is definitely stressful. A quick smash to the head would do it if you wanted to preserve for reptile food.

gassing is painful i assure you...my college had us raise over 60 quail we had to later disect them and to do that the schools code called for gassing...the sounds and the desperate attempts to escape will haunt me..they do not "fall asleep" they strangle to death... breaking the neck or freezing as freezing does hurt them but the body just gradually shuts down until they go to sleep its better than gassing to me.

as others said you could sell them to a feedstore or craigslist them .

the reptile food is also a good plan...reptiles have to eat to after all...generally they simply freeze the chicks/mice/rats some pet stores do it themselves when they have accidental rat or mouse litters OR they breed for that purpose.

CO2 is used to euthanize them. http://www.alysion.org/euthanasia/index.php here is a link. Ask the local zoo if they want them for snakes, large turtles or birds of prey. Many snake owners will gladly take them.
I live about 1 hour away from the zoo and don't really want to keep taking my chicks that far. i have contacted my local pet food store to see if they want them so will have to wait and see.

If anyone knows, could you inform me of whether gassing them using a car exhaust would be ok?

No. Car exhaust would not be a good idea.

x2 And many of us have explained that, although it has not been scientifically proven that gassing causes pain, we can pretty much confirm that it does through the stress sounds and actions by the animals. Be responsible in culling the excess by using the most humane solution.

do you mean it would harm the reptile or it wouldn't kill the chick? I have previously used a car exhaust to gas them and it works fine.
I have no idea if it would harm the reptile....but it would be a very slow way to kill them. unless you have a very old vehicle....like 40 years old, most have emissions contorls that really minimize the amount of CO given off. Now thats not to say its safe to breath..plenty of other stuff in there...and yes it will probably kill a baby chick....but not very humaine to the chick.... IF you are trying to find something to make you feel better...as in start the car, walk away and come back when they are dead....I think you have the wrong mindset.

yes it was an old car and hadn't been serviced for about 4 years. It only took about 20-30 minutes.

what are you factory farming lol let the roosters grow up in the dooryard freerange and use them for soups in the near future!
