I have a black frizzle cochin hen that is about a year old. She has black somewhat curly feathers. She does not have flight feathers on her wings. Instead she has sharp shafts with no feathers on them. Compared to other Frizzles I've seen she does not have as much coverage as they do. On top of that she has had this bare spot on the back of her neck that shows when she puts her head down or extended out. I love her to death but I'd just like to know whether she is a Frizzle or more of a Frazzle.

I'm not sure about being able to tell solely on appearance but I do know if it is a frazzle and you breed her to a smooth every chick she throws will be a frizzle (not frazzle). If you get 50/50 frizzle/smooth she's a frizzle. I have heard frazzles tend to have brittle feathers that break but I don't know if there are varying degrees of frazzleness.

I have frizzles (I bred them so I know that they are not frazzles) that after awhile, their wing flight feathers look just as you describe. The frizzle's feathers don't hold up as well to roosters treading and normal wear and tear as a normal feather does.
