I seriously screwed up.
I put my 5 new 5-week old barnvelder chicks outside for the day, thinking that a piece of wood was enough to hold them inside the pen and fogot to lock our front door...one of my dogs is adept at door opening and he got out, knocked the board over and killed one of the chicks. I found two huddled behind an outdoor shelving unit but the other two are missing. We have a bunch of stored lumber etc under our deck and if I start shifting stuff around to look for them something might squish them.
If they are in there, what would be the best way to lure them out? I put down some scratch and a bowl of water the offending dog is put away and I am not speaking to him (well, I spoke to him really loudly for a bit and threw him inside and NOW I am not speaking to him.) is there anything else I can do to lure them out? should I put the other chicks back out in a safe cage?
I thought I was giving them a nice day outside to enjoy eating some greenery.
