How to make a heat lamp???

ok so I use an old 2ft by 1ft glass tank to brood my last chicks and it worked quiet well but i have a question about sufficient heating. I want to know how to make a homemade heatlamp as i could buy one but would rather make one as they are like over $80.00... so has anyone sucessfully made one out of an old desk lamp or something??? Thanks for any help and pointers!!

80 dollars for a heat lamp?!?!

You should be able to find a heat lamp at the feet store for under 10 for a nice one. That said, if you need to make one, a ceramic base and a reflector would work. If brooding inside the house a regular desk lamo with 100W incandescent bulb will work just fine. You don't need anything special.

Go to the hardware section of WalMart, or the shop light section of Lowes, or TSC, or any hardware store.....

Buy a clamp on reflector light rated up to 150watts.

While you are there buy yourself a red floodlight in 75watt size.

Put two and two together, being sure to secure the lamp in someway BESIDES just the clamp (need a back up for safety reasons) and voila! You have a brooder light for about $15-20

I just made one out of a stand lamp (the kind that Wal-mart sells for 10 bucks with the reading lamp and the one on top) I took it apart a while ago so I had it laying round the shop. I took foil and lined it in and out I had a orange long extion cord laying round as well so I just wired it up and viola! It worked and still is going. I have a 90 watt light bulb in it (it is rated for 100 watt so it is safe)
and so far it is pumping out the heat and has been going strong *knocking on wood*

Like others have said you don't need anything great as long as it is rated 125 watts or better.

I have two of them. Do I only need one or would two be better? I have not hatched chicks.

I wouldn't use a halogen light they are very bright and would be an irritation to the birds. Get a red heat lamp bulb they are cheap.
