I'm making one for a business right now and using Intuit.com. It's 4.99 a month to host and the software is easy to use. Our alternative was 500-2000 dollars to get it professionally done. So far i am not having a hard time with it lol.

Honestly if you want to know how to actually make a website - Learn HTML. It is the language that runs websites, and it is what you use to build them. Sure, there are sites that do pre-built templates and all for you, but on a professional level - It is best you learn some languages.

One easy, good place to start is HTML Goodies. It will show you tutorials, basics, and then the more complicated stuff. It really helped me when I first started.

From there, if you have the time and patience, you can move on to things like PHP and/or Javascript - This very forum runs on PHP.

When I first started making websites, basic html was the only game in town! Nowadays there are so many different languages and design options, it's easy to get disoriented. I recommend Dreamweaver as a good builder's program, and the older versions are easily available. Just use a preloaded template and start changing things around until you like what you see! Good luck with your web project.
