TWe have red mites. We have used poultry dust and power washed the coop with bleach. DE and chand there bending three time. They are also now on feather fixer feed but only for about a week. The mite population is way down. I can't seem to find any but my girls are still itching. Help !! :he

You'll have to reapply the dust every 5-7 days for a few weeks to take care of the new ones hatching.
Get the dust into all the cracks and crevices of the coop.
Bleach and DE won't take care of an infestation.

x2 on this advice.

Thank you, we have been using the pouty dust every week on the coop and the girls. We only used the DE and bleach for the first cleaning because that's what we had on hand. We used poultry dust on the chickens and the coop the next day and every week since. I can't seem to find any of them in the coop or on my girls. How do I know they are gone?

Just keep looking for them at night, well after dark, on the roosts, coop walls and on the chickens skin.
Part the feathers all the way down to the skin around vent/head.neck and under wings.
If you see some, dust again....if you don't see any stop dusting.

I had this problem about a month ago and agree with chicken juggler but i also used a blow lamp after i disinfected the coop (wooden). When it is still wet go around all the gaps and cracks with the blow lamp and it fries the mites and eggs, but be careful not to leave it on the wood for too long as they are so hot it won't take long for it to catch fire (while the coop is still wet it steams it). Also i won't do it every week as it can blacken the wood but it worked really well. Obviously do not use on plastic

Thanks what is a blow lamp and where can I get one? It sounds promising !! Thanks juggler I will keep vigil over the nasty invaders. Hope they are gone:cd
