Hi all, I have a couple of chicks who are growing very slow. I want to feed them some poultry vitamins and electrolytes in their water just in case it helps. I have purchased Vetsense Avi-Vital and Vetsense Avi-Lyte

It says the dose is 2ml per 1kg of bodyweight, in 500ml water.

But my chick weighs 50g. That means it requires 0.1ml in 500ml water. It doesn’t drink 500ml water.. and 0.1ml is really hard to measure out. How do you use this stuff for chicks? Can they overdose on it?

Thank you!

Hi!

The stuff we use (Poultry Cell and Hydro Hen) just says how much to use in a gallon of water. It's for all ages, as it's relative to how much they drink...bigger chickens need more and drink more.

The 500 ml is a little more than 2 cups. You could mix that and put that in their waterer. If they don't drink it all, that's okay.

Otherwise, the only other way to ensure a chick/chicken is getting the proper dosage of something is to measure it in a needless syringe and syringe it to them, or mix it in something small that they'd eat the whole thing, like scrambled eggs.

As far as overdosing, most excess vitamins will run through them without a problem, but a couple can cause issues if overdosed on them. But, when a chick/chicken is very ill, they can be given Poultry Cell or NutraDrench straight in a syringe. That's usually temporary for a day or two.

Raw egg yolk is another thing you could try. That can perk up weak chicks and is a nutritional boost.

Thank you, that's really helpful, I will give that a go!
