How to move chickens?

Hi! I hope I posted this in the right area.

I may be moving across town at some point, and I would take my chickens with me. How would you move chickens? My coop is connected to the run so I can't keep them in there. They would probably not be in there for longer than an hour. Would cardboard boxes work?

If you have plenty of holes. How far is 'across town'? Here it's about 20 minutes, but some places nearby change that to about an hour or more, especially with traffic and roadwork

I am not sure, the town is pretty small but the house is on the outskirts.

Nope, just seen pics. And I looked it up on Google Maps, it is a 12-14 minute drive.

I moved last year, about a 20 minute drive. No boxes, just folded down the rear seats of the SUV and put down an old blanket. More than enough room for the 8 girls I had at the time. Within a few miles my RIR (RIP Nutmeg) was working her way up front to get petted and see where we were going.
