Hello im new to pheasants and my main concern is cannibalism. im getting 8 chicks on Tuesday and want to raise pheasants as a hobby. ive started raising quail and those are going great. we raise goats, steer, chickens, bees, and have a garden and ive been wanting to do pheasents for a while when i get them they are going in a brooder with a red light and then when there old enough they will be a large dog run/ coop with a indoor portion to. i can always expand it each bird will be getting about 8 sq ft is this enough ive read that they need up to 15 sq ft. they will be wearing blinders as well. any help/ suggestions is much appreciated. Thanks!

Also my first batch i will be getting as chicks but i want to start incubating my own to. will the lowered square footage be a problem for the hens to lay?

Your state has requirements for sq ft per bird. Here in N.H. it's 25 sq ft per bird. You may also need a permit to raise them as most if not all states require permits for ringnecks.I'm taking it your run is 8x8?It's fine for young birds up to maybe 14 weeks, but you will need more for when they are adults, and lots of cover also helps.

Thank you for the information the dog run is 10x10 as i have extra panels laying around i could make it bigger if need be do you get the permit through fish and game where could i find this information? ive already placed an order through my local hatchery and i didnt hear about a permit. thanks

Hatcheries won't ask about permits they just want to sell birds.Besides each state is different. You will need to contact your local fish and game dept for a permit.
Why are you buying from a hatchery? You have all the contacts right on here to purchase birds.Let me know what state you are in and I will see if there are any breeders near you.

i live in idaho ive seen some local breeders in caldwell and they have bird auctions but i think ill buy my first batch from the hatchery im hoping to make a couple bucks on the side rasing them how do you make money off them. dog training and clay pigeons? ive seen the ornamental pheasents are they for dog training to.

You won't get rich.If you make enough to pay for your grain you'll be lucky.Ornamental pheasants are not used for release hunts hopefully.
