How To Prevent Frostbite?

Also, be very careful about the type of waterers you have out there. You don't want your birds standing in a dish, or dipping wattles in the water. I think that dog water bowls could be a real problem in very cold weather for that reason.
Anyone have experiences with them?

I use Rubber stock bowls but don't have Birds with big combs or wattles...Plus I have to heat my Coop due to Respritory issues...

There are the horizontal nipple waterers that you can train your birds on. (I've not done that) But then those will freeze up too if it's cold enough...
Yah the boys do dip those wattles in the founts but my Welsummer didn't do too bad last winter. Just the front fringes of his wattles looked a bit dusky. No major loss on them. I do note he gives a head shake after he's drank from the fount so that is good. Might have to watch your roo for individual results.

Thanks, I know my pullets shake their heads, but I don't know if he does.

The point about the distance from the roof is a very good one! measure from the roost and the wall. I have had much better luck at 30 inches below the roof, and 15 inches from the wall. I forgot I did that.

My roosters with large combs often get naturally dubbed their first winter. I can't stop it. I definitely am not chasing multiple roosters around to Vaseline combs. They get frostbite, they lose comb points, than next year it isn't a problem.
That's my stance on the issue. Gets too cold here for Vaseline to help anyway.
