For some reason we're getting water in our coop...and it's causing problems. I think the main problem is rain getting in through the cracks around door. Is there any way to prevent water from getting in?
Are you sure that's where it's coming in, I suppose maybe strongly windblown rain could come thru the lower part of the door if it's really gappy but you do have a pretty good roof overhang there...
Weatherstrip around the sides and top of the door (actually you probably don't need it at the top, b/c of overhang). For the door threshold, either put in a proper metal threshold (from Home Depot) under the door, or make something similar yourself out of flashing (it won't work as well as a purchased one). And that should take care of it if that's really the problem.
Thanks, I'll have to look into that. I'm pretty sure that's where it's coming from, as the shavings near the door are getting soggy. There's a little bit of water by the pop door, but that's just from the girls going in and out and isn't a big deal.
From your picture, it looks like there is a significant gap at the bottom of the door with a lip that protrudes outward. Any rain that hits the door will drip down and in through that crack. One easy solution would be to move your lower door hinge outward so that the door overhangs that gap a little and install a drip edge on the bottom of the door.
By the look of your roof, you have exposed nails which water could easily seep through. I see many up at the top where there should be a ridge of overlapping shingles. Are these nails caulked? Do you see water up on the roof?
It's not dripping inside and the roof doesn't look wet, it's mainly just around the human and chicken door.
I'll try weatherstripping and adding the door shoe. There's a gap because the door was shaved down when we got it (it was practically free) so it's kind of an awkward shape. I don't know about taking the door hinges off because it was a miracle they lined up the first time we did it, haha.
Its hard to tell, but I think I see gaps between the shingle tabs (along with the exposed nails). If its not a problem now, it soon will be. Water can and will seep along the inside of the roof, along the wall and pool up at the lowest part of the coop. I would also finish off around the cutout to the left of the human door. I took 1X3 boards around the outer edge or the door itself and left about a 1" over hang (it sort of looks like a a picture frame around the door, and used offset hinges so it opens easily. By doing that, you also seal out drafts on nasty days. I also agree that the door needs what was already suggested.
Yeah I don't know what any of that stuff is...LOL. My father is not a construction guy and I don't know anything about building/roofing. Can you explain a little more? We're going to be installing some roofing panels on the run, so I'm sure we can fix that stuff while we're up there
I'm not sure how to fix the door though. We bought it with hinges already on it that were painted over. Do we need to remove the door and reinstall it? And what are offset hinges? How would that work for a door that opens outward?
