Guys, I know this item has been discussed, but I wonder from your personal experience, what if anything worked for you to protect your free-range chickens from hawks?
I've tried tying up CDs to nearby trees, and tried putting other reflective and wind-sounding tapes on the branches. Tried scarecrow, but none of this works in the long run. Hawks get used to it all of it and attack my chickens on a somewhat constant basis. I also have guinea fowl that raise an early alarm when they spot a haw, and that helps a little, but still loosing too many birds to hawks.
I understand that the best thing would be to have a guard dog that lives outside, but my wife would not go for it (especially since we have other dogs living inside).

I heard a good rooster can do some protection, but it seems it is a hit or miss and sometimes roosters themselves can become prey of the hawks.

Any other true and tested deterrents or protection against hawks?

Most people find that hawks chance taking a hen even with a human close at hand. Maybe humans do not seem very risky to a hawk? Hard to believe that most livestock dogs would be a deterrent -- although our Jack Russel use to patrol the skies and would bark alarms whenever the vultures soared overhead! People talk about having brush or trees for cover, but there are hawks that specialize in hunting in such cover and would not find it a deterrent.

I think that true safety only comes with an actual barrier overhead.

You absolutely right, I've had hawks that would attack my chickens right in front of me and I also had an incident when a hawk would attack my girls while they were hidden under the thick bushes.

Well none of mine will go easy unless it's an experienced raptor. I just integrated a couple of Leige Fighters, and I'm going to place my bets on these hens unless the Hawk is able to surprise or get a handle on them first.

Do you hope or you had a good experience with "Leige Fighters" protecting your flock?

Heavy vegetation seems to be the best protection in my experience. I cleared some of my land by hand years ago to begin building, and every single year the forest grows more and there are less and less hawk attacks

I've personally witnessed a hawk swoop down at a three week old chick, the chick hop into a bush and the hawk crash into the bush

A canopy prevents hawk attacks by blocking vision and smaller vegetation physically protects against attacks

Chickens are the descendants of junglefowl

I've seen their fighting instincts first hand. I was foolish enough to introduce them too quickly to my established flock and all hell broke loose.

They're beasts. Anything on the ground will get snatched like a cobra and dragged down.
Any particular place to get this breed of chickens?
