how to put a rooster down without violence?

If you're uncomfortable with a hands-on approach - axe, dislocation, etc, I would suggest looking into controlled atmosphere euthanasia. Some links to information, discussion, & videos. Absent this method, I would recommend a high powered air rifle .177 or .22 to the head.

Will look into a few of these see if it is something I could do. Thank you.

I could never break a chickens neck! goodness, what if i hesitated or did it wrong?? I personally think ax is the best way, one swift chop and its over, although i only did that once, and my dad did it not me, i just held his feet. the way i see it is like poultry Parent said, they lived a long full life much better than any commercial place, and they dont know whats happening to them, if they trust you for the most part. The cone thing still seems a little too long for me, i dont see anything more humane than a sharp ax....or... (nobody kill me) you could "forget" to lock him up one night and let the fox take care of him for ya.

Lol.. I have considered leaving him out once or maybe twice.. but being the suckered I am I start thinking about how scared he would be out there in the dark alone.... I have given up for the most part on killing him.. just going to let his grumpy rear stick around till he goes on his own or gets tired of having the younger roosters running him off...

I'm glad you didn't go through with it, Necklace. And I'm sure Old Man Rooster is happy with the outcome. This way, he can go on his own terms.

Wanna just note something here. I believe cervical dislocation is more suitable for hens as roosters have larger neck muscles, according to many different sources I've read in my search for an easy to do, low gore method of killing. I don't trust my aim enough for an axe.

I am not an extremely strong person (physically) but I still was able to use the above-mentioned method on a hen w/o botching it.
