How To Raise A Rooster

I honestly think it would be hard NOT to run if I am being flogged

! I will take your advice about ignoring them, although it will hurt as I suspect my favorite is a roo

also, the article you found is very helpful but I have a question about it....

If I never pick them up and just ignore them then how will I know if they have lice or mites or anything that concerns the flock?

Well by behaviour mostly. Give him a once over at bedtime, maybe once a week. In my experience with mites, you wont' have to do any more than pick him up to know. They crawl all over you *shudder*

oh @#* NO! They crawl on you?! Could I prevent that from using DE before it starts? I live in desert so I am a little worried about the DE since it is not good to inhale and they most certainly will inhale since my coop only has 3 sides-open ended coop to run design.

You can lessen your chances of issues with ample dust bath available to them. They should keep themselves free of mites if they have the proper areas to do so. I use a kiddie pool filled with top soil and wood ash. It really keeps everything under control. :)

This little Rooster that I rescued attacks me every time. Today I had to run. He must have been held to much and now I can't go out in the backyard as I let them free range my 1/3 acre. I don't want to worry about it every time and will need to wear pants and shoes before going out in my backyard. I will be looking for a new Rooster. I want one that won't attack me EVERY time it sees a human. What a booger. :(

We'll see how my boys turn out. Hershey is pretty aloof where im concerned-he takes treats with the girls but wont come to me until the ladies have eaten. Boot is just antisocial. Treats, food, other chickens swarming me-he has no part of it (he also bites the living $#1t out of me when i put him in the coop at night). Merle is a cuddler. As a brooder baby-he actively avoided me but as soon as his toes hit the dirt in the run he did a 180. He is the first to the gate, he guards me from Boot and has even flogged one of our big girls (who are 4 months older) when she jumped at me for a treat too aggressively. He and Hershey will come dust bathe directly beside me or sleep roosting on my lap or shoulders with the girls. They dont get out of my way, but neither do my girls (likely because every time i come to the run, they get yummies like veggies or ice for their favorite dirt areas, so im very popular out there). Hershey chest bumped my arm once (hes only a month old), so i booped him on the chest with my palm and knocked him down. Im kinda treating them like i do my horse and dogs: you can sit/cuddle/play however you want-but if you get aggressive or i tell you to move, you move. Dont be surprised if you arent bothering anyone and i move you just to remind you that i can.

Thats how my older girls treated the chicks-they pecked and chased them just to prove they could make tjem get out of the way. Id let the big girls chase, then id chase them. The boys fell in line with the girls.

What have you tried with him?

Well, I usually take a towel with me and throw it over him or a broomstick. I've tried acting tough and chasing him as well.

He comes all the way across the yard and stares at me like he wants to kill me. He grabbed tne towel I was using the other day and pulled it out of my hands. Maybe he will be happier when he matures and starts breeding? I don't know. :(

Oh geez! Sounds like he is fearless-that cant be a good sign. I think they get meaner when they start breeding. That's what the experts on here have told me.
