Help my husband "helped" a chick hatch and then put it back in the incubator to dry. When I went to check on it in a few hours it's dry but stuck in a little ball and can't move! I've been trying to wash it with warm water and a rag but I'm not making any progress! Does anybody know of a way to remove them excess dried yolk off a chick?
Somebody told me dawn dishsoap and another told me baby oil but I don't want to try anything until I know it's safe for the little guy!

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you.

Most chicks who have to be assisted during hatch (something which should absolutely be avoided unless it's life or death for the chick) will remain sticky-looking for a while afterwards. They should lose this appearance after a week or so.

since you said he can't move - I would suggest bathing him in warm water with some Dawn dish , keep his head above water. Be sure to rinse well and either use towels to dry him or a hair dryer set on low, so he doesn't chill. It may take a couple of baths to get all the goop off. But, doing it once, should allow him to be mobile.

I have done warm water and a drop of Dawn, the blow dry on low- mine seem to enjoy that! My last assist had to be bathed twice to get it all off.

Hello there! Welcome to Backyard chickens! I have not yet incubated any eggs, I always just get them as 2 day old chicks, so I do not know the answer to that question, but I would post in the incubating thread. I hope you enjoy BYC!

yesssss1.I gave mine a teaspoon of kickin' chicken feed supplement(liquid feed) and powder probiotics and electrolytes in a gallon of good water. 2. then I put her in a rag(dry, tight enough so she CAN escape when she's strong enough but not too tight she can't escape, she can get her bones back an place ( legs/joints curled toes)after 3 hours she was introduced to a baby sock if a egg yoke appears do not remove it they still need the nutrients do not cut, cut out so she can walk and after placed in incubator with 1 other chick:3 they do better, hopes this helps. also don't help them unless she's not stuck if the shell crakes and any of the..... is moist and still on her. Their bloody veins indicate their not ready (any kind of veins the should be microscopic small and dark red, the veins disappear(try not to help at all cost. I use sink water only NO SOAP AT ALL to clean them.

This is useful information for others but not for the person you replied to. They haven't been on this site for almost 9 years.
Feel free to make your own introduction post.
