how to repair a hard packed yard?

Just watch out for weed seeds! You might flip that soil around once or twice to reintroduce oxygen to the system and get that aerobic composting action moving.

You might try an orchard grass seed mix, typically designed for both the shade and high traffic of commercial orchard applications. Annual ryegrass and crimson clover both have high shade tolerance. Good luck!

I picked up some short fescue seed mix, and a pasture mix that is supposed to be good for poultry. When I get the portable fence, I'll get the chickens off of most of there old run and get it fixed up. Hopefully I can keep them off for the whole season so it has a chance to heal and the new plants can get started, then next year I'll include it in the rotation. I'm just amazed how hard packed it got just from last June on with only 10-13 birds. Oh well, live and learn and fix your mistakes.
