How To Sex A Chicken - Wisdom From An Old Timer

Quote:
Sexing by feather length is only for breeds who have been bred to have different lengths. I tried it on my Cuckoo Marans in the spring, was all excited that I picked two pullets from the straight run bin, I had picked the darker of the chicks that were left...
Nope - both roos.

This is funnier than any comedy show!!!!

Your kidding not even feather sexing?....by looking at the length of the quills??? heck...guess we resort to squeeze, poop and check....like that guy Mike Rowe on dirty jobs...I have that video also...lol
Im worried cause I bought from a guy, and I "bought" pullets...guess what?....I bought 15 and I have "7" roos!!!!!..."7"!!!!!!! and I also bought EE's and cuckoo Marans, ended up with 2 leghorns...1 sex linked I think that is what he is....3 roos RIRs...1EE, maybe the other is one, not sure yet...and a splash something...??? and I think a blue maran or silver???? I was told when I posted pictures they were blue laced red wyandottes, and splash wyandottes...but I dont see how if he didnt have any on the property....if anyone can help please...I'll show you pictures...maybe you can tell.

The wing feather method seems to work well for me. Mine turned out to be pullets. Of course, the most accurate way is wait until they mature about two months old but I didn't want to get stuck with a bunch of roos.

Happy sexing.....

We were told the same thing by an old timer at the farmers co-op here. dangle by the head, if they struggle they are boys, if they relax they are girls. Hoping for 4 pullets, we ended up with 3 roosters! All easter eggers.
