Good morning all,

I just purchased some super nice silkie chicks from a local breeder who's flock is NPIP certified, etc. I'd like to venture into the exhibition world but don't know where to start.

-What basic supplies do I need in terms of transporting and on the go supplies to have at shows?

-Do my birds need any blood tests (in Va)

-Are there any good websites/books for completed newbies???

I've been to a couple of shows in the past, but there aren't many in Virginia and only one annual 'big' one that I'm aware of. Any info is greatly appreciated....thanks!
Leslie :)

Poultry transport cages. Need to have them looking tested every 30 days of constantly showing. Or just before shows. have water and food crocks to put in cages or crates.

1. Most shows have their information online now so if you know the show name you can look it up and find out the show requirements including testing.
2. Have your birds ready to show, in good feather and weight, clean and pest free.
3. Have carriers that will keep your birds in good condition and that are also well ventilated. I use plastic storage tubs that I drill vent holes in with wood bits. They are easy to clean after use, don't break feathers and stack when not in use. Use pine shavings for bedding.
4. Participate in the NPIP program within your state, I believe you stated you are in Virginia, it is my understanding that Virginia requires Pullorum/Typhoid testing as well as Avian Influenza, if you participate in the program usually the P/T testing is once per year and you'll receive a certificate stating your flock's clean status. The AI testing will usually have to be conducted every 90 days to maintain certification as an AI free flock.
5. Abide by the rules of the show, don't handle birds other than your own or eggs, don't gripe and complain when you show up three hours before check-in starts and they won't let you check in early, don't gripe and complain when they require to to keep your birds in the show coops until the awards ceremony is completed. This is all simple etiquette and while there are those who will circumvent the rule, don't be one of them.
6. Be humble if you win be gracious if you lose.
7. Make friends, this is really what poultry showing is all about.

Blessings,

Bo
