How to stop cats from relieving themselves in flowerbed?

I remember when I was a kid this really old lady next door would put moth balls in her garden I asked her why she did it she said it kept cats away they dont like the smell.

I don't know if this really works I havent tried it but I never saw cats in her garden.

The smell alone kept me away from her garden too, i really hated that smell. I can't imagine a animal actually wanting even near the things they are God Awful!

You can get this stuff called Get Off My Garden. It can be found on PetEdge. com. Im not sure if you can find it at PetsMart or anything but you might try. Ive also heard of the moth ball solution. Ive heard the crystals are better because they are smaller and harder to dig up.

I have a different idea. Try using a mulch that your cats hate stepping on. I remember on a gardening forum that someone said something about using some kind of nut shell as a mulch to keep animals off. The sharp edges weren't very comfortable on sensitive toes. I think it was chestnut hulls. If you have roses, you can try laying some thorny prunings over the spots where the cats pee. I don't have cats, so I've never really had to deal with this problem, but I thought I'd share some thoughts.

Good luck.

Chicken wire works great! I have an old flower bed that I now use as a small garden and my cat LOOOVES to use it as her litter box.

Last year, I put a piece of chicken wire over the entire bed untill my plants got pretty big then took it off. When the plants took over the bed, she went somewhere else. Unfortunatly, I have to put the wire back again cause she is back to using it now that the snow is gone.

I was actually HAPPY when the cat started using the compost pile and garden instead of his indoor litter box. The plants are growing well in his former favorite spot!

We tried the moth balls last year... the cats didn't mind them a bit.

An idea though... as another poster said something the cats wouldn't like stepping on.. but rather, I would think a plastic material or even that rubber mulch they use for horse arenas... any time the cat tries to pee on that it would spray back up at them
