Sally's GF3 thread

I got some yarn to knit another scarf. I'm going to use the same pattern stitch as the 14" () scarf because I think it's so pretty. Already I like this yarn So. Much. Better! Even if this is acrylic and the other was merino wool.

I have a banana M-F in my oatmeal. I feel lost if there aren't any on the hanger thingie on top of the fridge on an oatmeal day.

So, just FYI... an average banana yields 20-25 thin slices (say, about 1/8"-3-16"). I'll have to remember that if I run out of fresh ones and use dried in my oatmeal.

Banana jam... hmmmmm. 🤔
As an aside, we have an Instant Pot we make our oatmeal in everyday. We often add a spoonful or two of ground flax. It comes out so good...we put peaches in it from our tree sometimes...bananas are great, too...I also love craisins and walnuts or pecans in my oatmeal.

I love my Instant Pot! The oatmeal is just for me, so I make it in a small saucepan on the stove. I haven't made the "overnight oatmeal" that I keep reading about.

Many years ago, I saw a woman make overnight oatmeal (long before it was popular) in a quart-sized crock pot. If I ever see one at Goodwill, I might get it to try that out.

I used to make "loaded oatmeal" for dinner sometimes. Oatmeal, cinnamon, bananas, and raisins. Now I make it for breakfast with bananas and chia, and sometimes add frozen cherries or blueberries.

I eat oatmeal 6 days a week also. Usually I just add some homemade unsweetened blueberry applesauce to it. Summertime is a good time to have the overnight oats. For my overnight oats I prepare them in a pint size jar with almond milk, blueberries, strawberries and chopped pecans. I'm the only one here that eats the real oatmeal since hubby wants the instant.

We eat the steel cut oats version on weekdays. Dh likes it with just unsweetened dried tart cherries. I like it with the cherries, any other dried fruit too, pieces of nuts, and pumpkin seeds in various proportions.

The new thing for me is adding buckwheat to it. I tried buckwheat instead of the oatmeal because of the osteoporosis diet but like the combination much better.

A bit of buckwheat improves rice dishes too. It has a little umami, and a little different texture.

Buckwheat! I hadn't thought about that.

I planted buckwheat in some of my garden beds after I'd harvested the onions or garlic in them. It has a lot to recommend itself:

Honey bees love it.
Planting the seed to bloom in ... 6 weeks? Maybe less.
Crowded out weeds.
Cut it down, let it return to the soil.
Frost kills it, so you don't need to worry about the plants overwintering and being a problem like, ahem, alfalfa.

It does not fix nitrogen. I'll see how many seeds sprout from last season.

Did I mention that it blooms quickly and the honey bees love it? I'll be planting it again this year in garden areas that need some filling in.
