Recently my Red sexlink has been laying HUGE eggs. Before they were like jumbo, and few of them weredouble yolks. Now theri just plain gigantic. I know that if they lay eggs to big to push out they can get egg bound. I don’t want her to egg bound. She doesn’t strain to lay them, and she lays every day without fail. There probably isn’t a way to get her to stop laying giant eggs, but will eventually stop layig super big and just lay normal eggs? Here are a few pics. This is her largest egg so far, the others were all around 2.6 oz. ( 75 g)

Also I have tiny hands, so its roughly about the size of a 12 year olds palm.

OK, she's still a little girl. She may level herself out and lay more normal eggs. If not, she will just lay these big ones, but I wouldn't worry too much about being egg bound if she is laying them this frequently and is not in distress.

I have 3 red sex links who have that same “problem”. They are around 8 months old now lay almost every day. They have for months now. Eggs are never less than 73 grams, usually 2 are around 76 to 78 grams and one always significantly larger, in the lower 80’s to 90 grams .
I worry one morning I’ll go out and one will be severely prolapsed, but so far so good!:fl

Wow! Big eggs. Some birds lay big eggs, no issues. Hopefully yours is one of them. Unless a specific issue arises, assume she is ok! She is a production breed, so it’s in her genes to lay large snd often.

some on BYC have used calcium citrate supplement (for humans) to help with prolapse, I believe, and also those birds with with chronic soft/weak shells.

Okay thanks! She doesn’t show any signs of straining to lay her eggs and she just hops into the nesting boxes and hops out when she’s done. She doesn’t really sing an eggs song either. (Thank god) Maybe she feels bad for our wondeful neigbors who have to put up with our ridiculous OEGB who screams the eggs song at the top of her tiny lungs every morning? If the big egg layer does show any signs of straing I‘ll check it out.

Wow, that's gigantic, not just jumbo! We have an australorp, 7 month old, who started laying before she was 5-month old. When she had an egg of 85g (vs her normal 65g or so), it was a double yolker! Is the 90g egg a "normal" daily size now?

It sounds like they are based on the commercial egg laying hybrids as opposed to being red sex links made by crossing two dual purpose breeds. So they are really good at converting what they eat to eggs.

What are you feeding them? If you are feeding a high protein diet you might cut back a bit to a lower protein feed. The commercial operations fed them a 16% protein Layer feed and still get Grade A Large eggs. That might reduce egg size a bit. But they are bred to lay big eggs.

That was todays egg from her. It was also double yolked. Her eggs were all about 70-75 since she started, but today was just just a giant egg out of the blue. I’m hoping that she just had a good day and will go back to her “normal” sized eggs.
