my mallard hen started sitting on her eggs after she laid 9 eggs. everything till now is going fine she only gets off the eggs twice a day for around 20 mins to eat and swim. since this is the first time i am taking care of a duck which is sitting on her eggs i wanted to ask a few questions .
1.is it okay that i leave my pen door open throughout the day and night? (the drake always stands gaurd outside the pen and even tries to chase me off when i am refilling their feed!)

2. will the drake harm the ducklings after/while they hatch?

3.my hen has been sitting for four days now and she laid 2 more eggs during this period is it normal that they lay eggs even while sitting? (she now sits on 11)

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I'm sorry I don't know anything about ducks. If you go to "Other Backyard Poultry" forum you will find threads on ducks. The duck folks should be able to answer your questions.

Welcome to BYC!

I'm not a duck person either (only chickens, so far!) so check out the duck forum drumstick diva referred to and hopefully someone there can answer your questions.

There's also a section in the Learning Center on ducks, there may be something there that will help:

Good luck with your hatch!

Those are questions I am wondering too.

I have a 2 appleyard ducks that have been sitting on like 9 eggs. This morning I went out to the coop and found 2 dead ducklings and only four eggs. I am wondering if they were attacked by the drake? Or what else I can do?
