That's amazing! Our little girl that we lost laid her first egg on my husband's shoulder, with her face pushed into his hair. We didn't know what was happening and then--bam!--little quail egg. She laid her second one on his lap a day or two later, but then we showed her a really nice little box where she continued to lay. That is soooo adorable! I had a similar experience with my female Kiki. The only difference is that she was raised with siblings and would call out until I went and got her. She’d get louder and louder until I did! When she was to the point of egg laying, she wouldn’t lay an egg unless I was holding her in a blanket 99% of the time. She layed one right in my hand more than once. Cherish this special relationship with your super-special little one!
I think you're right --- I float tested the eggs today and there was ONE little wiggler! -- Eggs are 3 days past due date but I had the temp a bit lower than usual b/c the incubator is cheap and the temp runs higher than it says ..... this may be why it's taking longer. Hopefully the little fellow pips it's way out without problem ...Don’t give up yet. There may still be a little miracle on the way. Fingers crossed.
They will lay when the moment arrives no matter where they are normally, but they will prefer to lay their eggs where they feel most safe and comfortable. It’s such a big deal for a teeny quail to lay an egg that looks huge when placed next to the teeny hen that laid it!! For those special human-bonded little button females, I believe they feel they need to be comforted during the ordeal. Kiki would scream as loud as her lungs would allow until I picked her up in her blanket. 99% of the time she laid her eggs in her blanket. I really think that she’d try to hold that egg in, screaming out in desperation, until she could lay it where she felt most comfy. If I wasn’t around, she had no choice but to use the nesting box. During those occasions, the egg would usually be found hidden behind the box. That's amazing!
