We have 5 acres. When we started free ranging, we watched them the first few times while our big lab was shut up. Then we brought him among them on a leash and my son told him in strong voice " NO" if he acted like he wanted to harm them. The lab finally got in one afternoon what he should not do. The next day he could run out and has never bother the chicks. All dogs are different so it would depend on how well your dog minds. Now he runs other dogs off that show an interest in our chicks.
