How to tell if a hen's gone broody?

Yup - that's normal too. Some hens will peck at you and squawk and puff up when you try to take eggs from under them every day. Some don't care at all what you do with them when collecting eggs.

Thanks for this thread. It answered/ confirmed some of my own thoughts.

If the hen's been pretty consistently on the nest for 2 weeks, with only breaks to eat & poo, and still goes back even when DH throws her out of the coop, then she's truly broody. I am confident about that.

My question: If I put eggs under her, after 2 weeks of taking eggs away, that's 5 weeks of broodiness. Will it hurt her?
