How to tell if you have bad eggs

My mom recently told me that if you crack open an egg and the yolk breaks and runs, the egg is spoiled. Is this true? I always thought spoiled eggs stunk. I have had eggs like that and they smelled fine.

No, you can always do a float test before you crack them, it just beans you were to violent cracking the egg, or your skin touched the membrane and it burst.

One way to tell if an egg is old (and possibly spoiled) is the float test. You fill a container with water and put the eggs in it. If they float, they're old/spoiled. If they sink, they are fresher and ok.

And if they hang out in the middle they are not super fresh but not spoiled (completely under water but not on the bottom.

I do know about the float test, but never heard of yolks breaking. But I am relieved that it isn't true.
