One of my 4 week old Buff Orphington chicks is getting a little nasty, when I put my hand in the brooder to fill the water or give them feed she comes after me and tries pecking me. Do I give her a slap, do I yell at her, what do I do to stop this behavior? It's getting me to be afraid, I don't want her to make me feel like this. This is my first attempt at raising chicks. Thanks, any ideas?

Try to keep in mind that it is just a chicken. Nothing to be afraid of. I would do more of a push. You don't want to do anything that would potentially injure it. Just push it aside and let it know that you aren't afraid.

I had a BO pullet that I was sure that I was going to cull for agression. I'd have my hands full and go to move her aside with my foot (gently not a kick or anything) and she'd jump up and kind of attack my foot when everyone else would move aside. She is a GREAT hen though. Not agressive in the least.

FYI: I do fine myself flinching when my extra roo looks like he is going to peck me too.

Mine peck at me too...thinking I have a treat in my hand. If any of them are too rough, I flick their beaks with my finger and tell them no loudly. Have no idea if this works or not, since it doesn't happen often, and I can never remember which one pecked at me the last time.
