I have always loved chickens- I tried having some when I was in my 20's but it didn't work out so well. I always looked forward to retirement, so I could get me some yard candy. After many changes (my husband's death, downsizing to a house in the city I work in), my brother came to live with me. He had been in prison since he was 18 and was now 58. The parole officer said he needed projects to keep him busy. Even though I was a couple of years from retirement, one of the projects was a chicken coop and chickens. He built the coop and cared for the chickens. He loved it and now lives out on a ranch and keeps lots of chickens, deer and cows and I have kept hens ever since.

Because my wife wanted chickens. When we looked for a place to buy we agreed on 3 basic criteria: 1) House with everything on one level 2) On a paved road 3) She wanted chickens.

Of those 3, we got the chickens. I'm still not sure exactly why, but it's OK.

Started raising and breeding Rhode island reds to the standard because of their significance in American history...And because they are beautiful. Also barred Plymouth rocks because the same...also the hybrid they make is a very valuable asset in the farm

Raising as pets. We butcher males and prioritize females. I want to give them a good life, but also want to have a productive flock. We don't keep them as much for eggs now. They are just great animals and will always be top on my list. Breeding is fun, but currently I am not looking into showing or breeding purebreds. Looking into developing a line of various "Eggers"
