HOW WILL I KNOW????? I am excited but a bit lost.

Okay My mama Embden goose is on her nest.....today is day 29. Her mate my Gander Toulouse Romeo refused to go outside so I knew something was up. I bent down near her and her nest (about 2 ft. away and my nurse and I heard peeps peep peep peep.... all different sounding peepe and I was so excited. We saw ONE gosling head that popped out from under mom's wing. NOW...HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN SHE IS DONE? How will I know when all the eggs that are going to hatch are hatched. Everyone says DO NOT move her so I am confused. :? HELP PRETTY PLEASE XOX

How exciting - baby goslings! I think mama goose will make the call really. I have read that the eggs tend to hatch withing around 24 hours of each other. Even after they are hatched she will spend most of her time on the nest for a day or so. My goose mom let her goslings follow her off the nest after a couple of days, and I took that as a sign that the last egg was not going to hatch.

I have had geese for a bout a year and she laid a clutch last FALL...yes Fall but only sat on it for about 3 weeks than deserted it, so this is my first hatching clutch so I just want to do it right and not mess it up. So I should FOR sure NOT move her to try to peek right?

I also have 17 baby chicks (16 pullets and 1 cockerel) that are in a brooder and are now two weeks old today that I bought at the Cackle Hatchery at one day old. AND I have a flock of layings hens . I had a rooster but he was a cross with a giant breed and couldn't make contact with hens to mate them so all he did was tear them up..... they were nearly bald so I had to sell him. Well once my cockerel is of servicing age he will have his pick of hens lol.


Anyhow keep giving me info folks. The more I learn about the baby geese the less nervous I will be. I research a lot but hearing things from experienced goosers somehow makes me feel better. There is a shallow bowl of water near the nest and a bit of feed. And we built a pond when we first got geese but are in the process of enlarging it due to the clutch. We will have it finished by tomorrow God willing. INFO INFO INFO please. God Bless

If you want to try and check under her, it might be worth an attempt. That just depends how agreeable she and the gander are when you reach for the nest. I felt very honored last year when my Sebastolpol goose, Sabrina, let me lift her belly and take a peek at the goslings and eggs. But I know most geese are not as laid back as she was.

My goose broke a metal trash grabber because i had it in my hand when i decided to look in on her i wasnt even close enough to touch her with it even if i wanted to. Shes a witch now i hate to see her this weekend when shes done.

Well as of yesterday at around 11:00 there was one gosling. Dad is still guarding her like a Trojan soldier. She is still sitting on her eggs. I moved her water dish to her and she bit it first and THEN i TIPPED IT A BIT SO HER BEAK TOUCHED THE WATER AND SHE DRANK AND DRANK. Oops caps lock lol. Anyhow, my nurse and I went to ck on her this morning and take care of mu chickens and there are not any more goslings yet Is that unusual? Maybe more today? she stood up a bit and tapped a couple eggs and moved a couple and laid back down. I am worrying a bit....sigh

It sounds like sitting mother goose has hopes for some more eggs to hatch, so maybe there will be more goslings today. My Sabrina goose had about half of her eggs hatch, and they did not hatch all in one day.

I HOPE there are more....still none today but she will NOT move off the nest at all. I took two eggs out and did the warm water test and they both bobbed so they are good eggs..... but no more have hatched yet STILL! Everyone tells me let nature happen and let do her thing. Another egg I had picked up had a little hole in it so I put it to my ear and tapped...no tapping back. Totally silent. No peeps, NOTHING. So I decided yo do a no no and break away some of the egg and there was a chick inside with yolk still attached and no movement so I guess having the hole over by its but must have been a boo boo. It was not dry inside though. I am REALLY worrying now. Out of SEVENTEEN eggs ....ONE gosling so far? All 17 of my chickens lived and are still going strong at 16 days old. Feisty and flying. Adorable.

BUT WHAT the heck is going on with the goose eggs. ONE gosling? Sigh.... I feel like crying. I made a call and asked a hatchery about it and they said give it about five more days....she WILL abandon the eggs herself if they do not hatch soon. Tell me something PLEASE someone.

That was a good idea to call the hatchery, after all they should know what they are talking about. I have only been nurse maid to a setting goose once, so I am no expert. Your goose sure has been sitting on a lot of eggs. I wonder if she was able to keep them all warm enough to develop. I know it is hard when people say let nature take its course, which really means we have no control over the process.
