How will I know if I have a rooster?

Always exceptions to the rule, but a great indicator. As far as temperment goes...some of the pullets can be relentless, and prolly not a good reason for thinkin cockeral, in my opinion.

That was nice to view a thread from the dead!

Bought 6 RIR pullets last Wednesday from TSC.

Four of them have put own very nice wing feathers and this morning had pin feathers showing up on their tail.

The other two have no tail feathers showing yet but one has wing feathers that are less developed as the other four. The smallest one in the flock has no tail feathers and just some very short soft brown wings feathers that have not grown in comparison with the other 5 who have had their wing feathers to grow by leaps and bounds!

Can not tell any difference about the combs...most of them seem to have a tiny one forming.

That lil one is spunky! When I offer crumbles in the palm of my hand he always jumps up into the palm of my hand while the others stand in the brooder and eat from my hand. In fact every time I put my hand in the brooder he jumps on my hand; appears he likes me.

I've got 3 Australorps that are about 3 weeks old. One of them has much longer and more pronounced tail feathers than the other two. All the combs look the same-small and yellow. Part of me is hoping for at least one cockerel

Ha ha! you're right. With everybody getting chicks now I'm sure it's going to get lots of hits though!

I hatched 4 chicks 6 weeks ago:
I feather sexed them day 1. Speedy was the only girl.
She was the only one with a tail for 3 weeks.
According to the 4-6 week feather characteristics....speedy is still the only girl.

Then I posted pictures of 3 for the BYC experts! Thompson is a girl, the other 2 are boys, including speedy.
I didn't post a pic of the FBCM who I thought was a male, but I've had roos before and he looks like a she! No comb at all! All my marans roos had big red combs at that age. So...I'm clueless!

According to all those tests I had 3 boys and 1 girl.....Now I have 2 girls 2 boys...but I still can't believe speedy is a boy!

Time will tell for sure....keep us posted as to what your results actually turn out to be. It can't get any more fun than this can it
