Only if more people remembered this!!

Thats a good size one. Everyone has their own opinion about killing snakes and welcome to it. I would have done the same thing and i'm not scared of them. but I pay the feed bill around here. I'm not feeding snakes my eggs for free. And there are plenty more snakes out there you never see, they can eat the rats. Keep up the good work.

I am so afraid of snakes I can't imagine what I would do if DH was at work and I found something like this.

That is my biggest fear over raccoons, opposums or any other predator.

Other than the immediate surprise snakes can give when found ... why would you be afraid? I doubt a snake can eat a whole chicken .. More power to them if they can get down one of my fatty hens.. If it's eggs your worried about that should not be a problem if they are not left out to collect into a pile. I figure its all a balancing act.. room enough for all.

I had one of those big rat snakes eat my eggs, baby chicks and then went for my beautiful silkie, Sugar. He tried to eat her and she was too big to swallow so when I arrived at the coop there Sugar is all dead, wet and sticky:hit:mad::mad::mad:....I second the philosopy" if a snake is in my chicken coop it's a dead snake!"

There was no balance..it was snake 10 my babies 0 . Never found the snake but I don't live there anylonger, either!
I feel the same way about those crappy coyotes....they have all this land and they go for my chickens....if a coyote happens to come by and there is a rifle handy..it's a dead coyote!

I used to love snakes even kept 5 as pets but my DH hates them so I gave them up. Last year we had two babies eaten by snakes so now if I see them around my place they die.

I'm with you on that one. What a shame. How can one claim to love animals and then kill something like this. I'm not impressed.

We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means."

That gave me the hibby jibbies! Ewww! There would be NO way I'd touch one of those things! We had one in our basement when I was a kid, my dad was not home, so my mom had to get it...she used tongs and screamed like a baby all the way outside! Won't ever forget that image!!

Good for your hubby killing the snake, you've got my complete approval, if it matters any.

I let all snakes live, with only two exceptions. Poisonous snakes are killed, no question. Snakes found in chicken coops are killed, no question. I absolutely refuse to buy layer feed just so a snake can eat most or all the eggs. If nothing else it scares the living day lights out of the hens. If I were a hen I wouldn't want to lay in a nest that smells like a snake!

And don't tell me to relocate the snake... Most times it'll just come back, as will any other predator. Just kill the darn thing. (and I'm NOT the kinda person who gives the death penalty easily, just so ya'll know)
