I saw an old beaten up hen and her boyfriend, Rooster, on an animal rescue site. I thought, oh, it would be cool to have a chicken.

Two months later I have two coops full, two brooders full, and an incubator full.

It's a progressive and incurable disease.

My wife's friend had a chicken and told me how it used to run in the house, down the hall and jump up on her daughter's bed every morning. That sounded cool.

After a year or so of working over my wife I now have 3 chickens. Bless her heart.

My son had been bugging my DH and i for a year to get chickens. We finally gave in and got 3 Buff O's, 1 Australorp, and 2 RIR's. Well now we have 27 Roos and Hens and i think i am enjoing them more than anyone els in my family LOL!!! Yeah... I am a little chicken obsessedLOL

I just decided last year that I wanted chickens. So I begged my mom and so my friend's older brother and I built the coop and I got 4 or so banty chicks. 4 became 10 and 10 became 6 then 6 became 25 older birds and now I have over 100 adults, teens, and chicks (hatched at least 50 under my broodies this year ) Dont worry. I plan on selling most of the teens and chicks. If anyone is interested in some almost 2 month old chicks in or near Abq NM, PM me for breeds etc.

Not to be rude but to all those people out there that just assume I'm breaking the law I don't live in the city, I live in the country where there isn't a bird limit as long as they get food water and a place they can move around and stand up in.

I got my first chicken at a feed store. Nothing exciting. My Mom's story is cool though. When she was a teenager living in an apartment in Detroit, she got her first job and spent her first paycheck on chickens! She bought 3 baby chicks and put them in a cardboard box brooder in her room that she shared with her sisters (9 kids in all!) She was a city girl, and had no idea how to raise chickens, but she knew she wanted them. She didn't have money for a heating lamp, so to keep them warm, she got snow from outside and put it on the thermostat so that the heater would come on and make the apartment hot! Well, the landlord accused her mother of tampering with the thermostat, and her mother accused the landlord of having a faulty heating system, and everybody was angry except for my Mom and her warm little babies that no one seemed to notice! I can only imagine the scenario . . . 9 rowdy kids, a single Mom, a little Detroit apartment at 90 degrees, and a quiet teen in the corner with 3 little baby chickens; quite the zoo! I love my Mom.

At the flea market! I rescued 2 RIR chicks from some grubby fingered kids who thought they were fun to squish. Now I squish them (lovingly of course) and their two little sisters (BO and BL) and two Pekin friends. Happy family.

Wow! These are really cool stories!
My first chicken was actually bought at a feed store as a dyed, Easter chick.
The people who bought him gave him to their daughter and eventually, the daughter was annoyed by the chirping! She gave him to my teacher to find someone to give him to and I saw him! I wanted him sooo badly so I took him home!
