Chicken dad AND baker! I'm big on baking and cooking. Any truth to the rumors that using fresh eggs to bake causes issues? Have you tried yet? I'm particularly curious about cakes and cookies since they get cranky if the mix is too dry or wet, etc. I bake all from scratch also and wonder if it's best to reserve the fresh eggs for eating and buy for baking? My one year old is an egg machine, when we get to the point of having fresh eggs, we may still have to buy some!!

Happy to see other LA peeps here, I'm from Pasadena.

Hey there Pasadena chicken!! I used to live right near the arroyo, but am now in Montclair.

I haven't paid much attention to recipes in regards to eggs... Since my gals are still laying small eggs, I haven't baked much with them.... I get my baking eggs at the frames market. One gal is starting to lay bigger eggs, so gonna start using hers.

I bake and cook from scratch. I make my own sauces, salad dressings, jellies, jams, breads, pretty much all my cooking is that way,... Oh sure, I have lazy moments where I open a box of something, but I always complaint that I could have done it better...lol.

How many chickens do you have?

we have five chickens, our queen gal just recently died at 7months old...imagine the shock, gathering her egg that morning, feeding her treats, and an hour later she was dead... It's baffling, since she was the personality of the group.

Do you go to Pasadena farmers market? Haven't been there in a year or so, it's one of the better ones around.

Dad-
I'm in gathering mode. I have the makings of my brooder and plan to get some chicks in the next week or so. I'm leaning towards 4 to 6 since we don't really have regulations about how many where we live. We are in the county part of Pasadena, right near the Huntington and CalTech. Because of this, I am going to need a real predator proof coop. We have skunks, squirrels, rats, and who knows what else. I'm debating whether to use 1/4 or 1/8 hardware cloth because of the amount of jerks who wanna eat chickens here!
I have not been to the Pasadena farmers market. I went a few times to the S Pas one before we moved here (a year ago) and was not impressed after coming from the HUGE Hollywood farmers market for years. I want one where they sell veggies and fruit, not all those prepared foods and bric-a-brac. And I want it organic! S Pas kinda soured me, I need to check out others in the area.
I also cook and bake everything from scratch. I don't like packaged food either, I'm always annoyed with how it tastes! Even the Trader Joes soups get reinvented here. I like to make my own stock and dressings as well. I just made worcestershire sauce last week. What a difference!

Sorry to hear about your chicken, do you know what happened? It seems that happens sometimes but it sure would be good to know what to do to prevent it. I've been reading about the worm thing and I'm pretty conflicted on that...

Do you have a coop you like?

Oh, the Pasadena market is nice, lots a veggies, lots a fruit... If you go, be sure to give it a once around before buying. Some vendors keep fresher stuff.

I lucked out, the place we are at has an old old shed/storage shed that I set up as my coop... Our backyard is sooo small, the I let the girls forrage the front yard at their leisure.

Don't know why Giada died... Running around healthy one minute, dead on the ground the next...

For sure you have more leeway in county area,... What kinda of birds you getting? There are some cool places in Pomona that sell all sorts...

I had my gals in a cardboard box fora while, then made them a 4x8 plywood living ara and once they got big enough I let the roam the yard...at night would bring themin and now they are used to the coop/shed.

I'll def check out the farmers market in Pasadena. It's worth going, no matter what. Worst case I'll get some yummy tomatoes!

Poor Giada, I've heard quite a bit about chickens/Roos just dropping dead of heart attacks. Wonder if that is what happened? Sad.

I'm leaning towards Black Copper Marans, Welsummer, EE or real Ameraucanas, if I can get them. Bcm is my top choice. What do you have?

I haven't decided what to do with the coop yet. I'm picky, want it to look a certain way but know building it myself will cost almost as much as buying what I want pre-made. I'm thinking a green chicken coop and modding it out with predator
proof bottom and possibly a light sensitive door and self waterer. I'm a designer so things need to look just so. I wish I wasn't so anal about it, but that's what I do. I design stuff for a living. Ahhh well.

Do you have a predator problem? We are so close to the Huntington, which has major coyotes, etc. I worry.
