Hey everyone hows everyones spring starting? Well mine started with deciding i need to add some chickens to my yard, so i did a few weeks research and a week planing the build of the coop, (built with all salvaged material except the chicken wire)

things went well and i managed to build this beautiful home for the girls.

So last monday i got my 6 girls (hi-line brown's) POL, 18 weeks, 4 days ago one already started squatting and soon she will be popping out some tasty breakfast. I have named one smarty pants because she has been the one to do everything first.

Only downfall sofar is that i might be alergic to them, i have had hives for the last 2 days on my arms and am trying to figure out if it is the chickens or a weed i touched.

Well cheers to having chickens and cant wait for the fruits of the labour.

Talk to y'all soon.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Gorgeous coop! You did a fantastic job!

As for your being allergic, I have an allergy to my chickens dander. I cough and wheeze when they are molting, just as you might wheeze having an allergy to dogs or cats. It is possible that you are having a reaction, but hives can come from many things from your environment and even stress. If it does continue throughout the weeks, it is possible you are allergic. I hope not. You don't want to have to get rid of your birds!!

Enjoy this new adventure and I hope you are not allergic!!

Thanx, it was alot of mental work building this all from salvaged wood. If i am alregic i would NOT get rid of them, i would figure out a remedy, but thanx for your concern, i have no other symptoms and think it might just be the weed that i touched but if i get them again i will get tested for alergies to them, im not allergic to anything so this would be a first. I will just have to wait and see.

I still have a few finishing touches for the coop, i still need to make deviders for the nesting box and shingle the roof, make a feederand waterer, for now im just sprinkling food on the ground and letting them forge the yard and putting fresh water in a bowl 2 times a day, untill i get the other things made.

I am a DIY salvage guy too! Welcome to BYC! For a waterer, I made my own for almost nothing. I had to buy some nipples, I had the other stuff. My plan is to build the 25# auto feeder as soon as I find a bucket with a top I am not already using. Lots of ideas on youtube. Built my own incubator as well. If you need any plans, just let me know. Good luck with your chickens!!

So i live in British Columbia, Canada. Where it rarely snows were i am, we would be lucky to get snow 1 day a year, whats it take to keep them in this climate during the winter?
