We are new to raising chickens. We got our first four (3 hens, 1 rooster, all Ameraucanas) about mid summer last year. Unfortunately, our rooster didn't make it but a couple months. He was 5yrs old when we got him and we were told then that he probably wouldn't live much longer due to his age. It's shame because we grew quite fond of him. Since then, we have acquired 5 more (4 hens and another rooster) for a grand total of 8. We now have 5 Ameraucanas, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Wyandotte, and our big boy, a Langshan.
So far they have been a fun experience. Our youngest son really likes them, and honestly, I have enjoyed them much more than I expected. They definitely are not as I'll tempered as the ones I remember on the farm as a child.
Hope all is well with everyone, and you find as much, if not more, enjoyment with your flock as we have found with ours.
