Howdy!

My name is Shawn, and I have over the last few years lurked about here ...

I use to raise chicken for both meat and eggs (Cornish X and Black Sex-link) when I was a teenager (many, many moons ago ;) )

I really am wanting to get back into chickens again, going a slightly different path ... Looking to be more self-sufficient and raising my own chicks with a broody hen(s) ...

I'm really interested in the Buff Orpington's and Speckled Sussex breeds ...

You sound like my kind of person! I keep buff orpingtons and a speckled Sussex. They are super friendly and affectionate. The Sussex is a bit loud and VERY curious and sweet! You will LOVE these breeds! The Sussex lays small brown eggs and the orpingtons lay large brown eggs. They are great breeds!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Buff Orps can go broody and would hatch and raise fertile eggs. You would need a good rooster OR could buy fertile eggs of any breed and swap her' not fertile 'ones for fertile eggs you purchased.

Silkies generally go broody frequently and many people keep them just for that reason - they can put other eggs under them and not need to use a complicated incubator.

So glad you could join our community! Oh Buff Orps are a wonderful breed to keep! Very docile, friendly and great layers too. If you want a good dual purpose bird, the Orps are the way to go.

Welcome to BYC, Shawn. Glad you decided to join our flock. Black Sex Links are my favorite chickens; hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids) and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per year. I've also raised Buff Orpingtons and Speckled Sussex (still have BOs in my flock and have seriously considered getting some more SS). The BOs and SS can't match the lay rate of my Black Sex Links, but they are extremely friendly and gentle birds. My children made lap pets of them. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Here is a picture from long ago ... Probably 35 years ago ... Back then I didn't know you could order from anyplace other than the local feed store ... They had three choices - Cornish X, Black Sussex, and White Leghorn's, since we liked brown eggs ...



This one came with our Cornish X, and was supposed to be a cockerel ... Turn out he was a she! Once she started laying ... And after he first molt, she got the buff feathers! We called her "Buffy" and she ALWAYS laid double yoker's, and occasionally we got a triple! Usually about four eggs a week though ...



I don't remember where we got our Banty rooster ... He was a good rooster, and kept the hens in line, he lived with us for about a dozen years, Dad thought fertilized eggs were healthier, even though we never tried to incubate any ...



We usually got 50-100 Cornish X every year, and every other year we would get 25 of the black sex-links ... They did lay ALOT'
