Hello. I have been reading in the forums for the last two years and today I finally joined. I don't know why I hadn't done so sooner.
I was raised in the country and with livestock so naturally once we moved to the country we got poultry. It will be a while before we have fencing up and land cleared to do large livestock. We are located in Austin, TX and currently just have chickens for our enjoyment and nearly organic eggs.
I am interested in Heritage breeds, and rare breeds. My first profile pic is a pair of Tolbunt Polish's I had. My interest is mostly in dual-purpose, hardy, good-foraging, and able to withstand heat or cold. I currently have just 3 BIG hens. A Delaware (big and bossy, rules with an iron fist, err beak), a Black Australorp (Australian Orpington) gentle and on the bottom of pecking order even though she outweighs the Deleware by at least a full pound, and a Buff Orpington (2nd in pecking order) who is full sized but seems small compared to the other 2 girls. All three lay BIG brown eggs and are good egg layers. All three lay almost every day. The Deleware and Australorp lay light brown eggs, and the Orp lays medium brown eggs. Their eggs are often so close in size and color that I can't tell who laid which.
For now I only chickens for fun and for our family's egg supply. I have a reaction to store bought eggs, must be chemicals they are clean them with. I love watching my big girls roaming around on our property, they have free-range during the day over several acres. We used to have smaller hens (Tolbunt Polish pair, and a Bantam Modern Game Rooster) as well but I sold a few and my sons pet bantam, an Old English Game hen passed away at only a little over a year old. She was the fiestiest little thing but very friendly and easy to handle. He used to walk around the property with her tucked under his arm like a football, and she didn't mind a bit.
I'm happy to be a part of the group and once I get my chicken area's prepared to house at least 30 birds, I hope to raise a Heritage breed to sell eggs and chickens to preserve endangered breeds.
