Hello all,

My family and I have finally jumped into the fray. We have been reading and researching backyard chickens for a while. A neighbor had a few chicks about 3 years ago and since then I have been thinking about trying a flock of my own.

Friday we brought home 3 Buff Orpingtons and 3 Light Brahma day old chicks. Now two days later and all seem to be happy and healthy. My 4 year old daughter and 6 year old son are in love with the chicks and they have been helping keep the chicks clean and fed.

Our yard is a smallish lot in a neighborhood, so I doubt our flock will grow much bigger than 8 or 10 chickens.

This far it has been a fun family project.

Thanks for the warm welcome. My first grader was quick to correct my original post. The chicks are now 5 days old.

Most importantly, all of the chicks seems healthy and happy. The kids are excited about it and my long-suffering wife who has watched me go through lots of hobbies over the years, is finally on board.

I noticed she got up in the night to check on the peepers. Our Great Pyrenees dog, the only part of the family I was slightly concerned about, seems to have taken up his guardian dog role quickly. He had never seen chickens, but last night he slept in front of the crate, and not in his usual spot, beside my bed.

Welcome to BYC! You have chosen 2 wonderful and beautiful breeds of chickens. You are going to have so much fun watching them grow out - lot's of things to talk about with your kids.

Welcome, Mike!

As others have said, good luck with sticking to just 6 chickens. I started with 3, now have 14, and want to get more! Many people think we're nuts (including myself).

Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences. You know the drill - If you need help, just ask.

Welcome! You are going to love it here! If you have time, try and find the thread Texas, you'll see there are lots of us Texans and you'll also be able to meet others in your area!
