Hi, I'm Chris, and this will be my first year raising backyard chickens. I've been reading a lot on the forums since last year when I found out my city changed their laws on allowing chickens to be kept within city limits. The BYC page has been awesome in preparing us for things that we need to know, and helping us select breeds that will do well in our area, and give us the productivity that we're wanting. We're excited to add to our "homesteading" backyard, and can't wait for fresh eggs!
My wife and I have six two-week old chicks now that we're raising, three buff Orpingtons and three silver-laced Wyandottes. Three to four of this flock will stay with us permanently, the rest will be moving to a friend's farm. We have our coop set up, but we'll be building some ranging tractors for the girls over the next couple of weeks. Since we have dogs (who only seem curious at this point) we want to make sure the chickens are protected when the dogs go outside.

and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks! Glad the laws got changed and you are now allowed chickens! If you do a search, there are a number of threads on training dogs to be around chickens, it does require a lot of patience usually and what method works best depends on your individual situation and dog.
