That's the thing -- the stuff sold by Home Depot (In Salisbury, MD for me) is small pine chunk or pine bark mulch. It's 1/4" size and the chickens tear right through it like aspen/hay/hemp. They used to have the large pine bark nuggets but have since stopped supplying it to the store near me roughly 5 years ago. They only have tiny chunk or mulched pine bark.Do you have a Home Depot near you, or if this works, have them ship it?
You have a gorgeous coop and chickens.Welcome to BYC!

The stuff I get, the size of the nuggets are 2" - 4" in size and not a lot of dusty substrate in-between. The girls can rip through the pile but not tear up the bark chunks which absolutely extends the substrate almost like gravel. Eventually they can compact it into a "trail" like they normally can with anything in their run. I just flat shovel the mounds they make and refresh by putting a few bags overtop where I removed the cake-pile.
I should do a short YT video comparing the three pine bark substrates. Two pallets have lasted me almost 18 + months -- down to my last 6 bags so it's almost time to do a trip again.
Not to mention, I use it on a spot where my two Red Labs go to use the restroom. Very durable for them to do their stuff and also keep the smell away so long you pick up after they go
