Howdy from Melbourne Florida

Hello and welcome to BYC from Kentucky. Sounds as if you have your plan worked out! The barred Plymouth Rock is considered to be a duel purpose breed and our three ladies are always extra plump and good layers, so if you decide to purchase a few of them any roosters would dress out rather nicely. Our first baby chick purchase consisted of six red sex links, four assorted bantams and four buff Orpingtons. The store 'manager' insisted on sexing the Orpingtons for us because we wanted all pullets. Once they were a month of age we found out he had given us three cockerels and one pullet!

Best wishes on raising your flock!

Hey! Thank you!

Aye - it almost seems like a good idea just to purchase several baby chicks and fill the freezer with some tastey chicken - but alas, I live in a CITY on a tiny speck of land so I simply can NOT (talking to myself more here than you all) be Farmer Fishy on this postage stamp section of my yard.

I am so excited to get some chickies - just got to find a local area that sells the chicks - got a few ideas but no reviews on their stock.

I must be lucky...i live right in town, but they allow as many chickens as u want....they even allow roosters. thats of course untill the neighbors complain, so i dont have any roos

Hi there!

I'll be moving to the Melbourne area soon and am brand new to the BackYard Chickens movement :-)

I had chickens when I was younger. I had a Rhode Island Red that used to take over my dog's litters as if they were her own pups. She'd spread out her wings and walk across the yard with the puppies under the wings. She'd really only let them go back to their true mom during feeding time, otherwise she'd chase off the dog mom.

Anyway, I was curious about the Brevard, Palm Bay, Melbourne area aspects of raising this type of animal in the back yard. I really just want a few for eggs. What are the stipulations that way?

I just did a bit of research myself - as I do not yet have a coop or chickens (still hoping) but since I am within the Melbourne City limits - I can have up to 4 hens in my backyard - with a permit - and permits are fairly easy to get through the zoning board. If you are outside the Melbourne City limits but within Brevard County - you can have 1 hen - but there was just a hearing at the County Commission about this so it may be changing soon.

Roosters are not permitted anywhere residential in Brevard - now if you live in a semi-rural or agricultural zoning area - I have no idea what the regulations are but I would imagine you could have more critters.
