Hello all! I am new to incubation! So many thoughts, questions, and concerns! Although I will just start off with some info. I was given a dozen mallard eggs eight days ago. Incubation for seven. I candled last night and didnt see much then a yellowish orange oblong round (mass?) The lady that give them to me said it was to soon to tell for certain. To continue with incubation and recandle around ten or fourteen days. These eggs was refrigerated and I've heard you can and and can't use refrigerated eggs? I do know she has successfully hatches and sells to a local farmers market. So some insite would be helpful. I've also recently started another incubation with chicken eggs (Rhode Island Reds and Dominickers) I candled only a few them they look similar to the duck eggs. I'm just not seeing the veins. I don't wanta get rid of them just yet but dont want exploding eggs either so any suggestions is welcome! So excited about this experiment and definitely a hobby and enjoyment I'll enjoy for years!

you can usually candle duck eggs after 7 days. and if they were refridgerated you will want to bring back to room temp before placing in your incubator. I know Duck eggs and Chicken eggs do better at different levels of hummidity many people mist duck eggs. and the hatch times are different so having a lock down period would be harder to do them together.. there are lots of great charts on the web to show you what things should look like when candeling duck eggs at different dates .. here is just one link with a chart.

Thank you I have a few booked marked charts I was compairing with last night but nothing like they was showing. I did leave Duck eggs out for a day to adjust to room temp. I mist them and turn 2x's a day. But thank u for the website I will check that one out! Would you say after a few days rechecking and see nothing they are not fertile?

WEll you went this far and being that they were giving to you so you cant be 100 percent on their dates I would wait a while.. But I am an optimist .. Eggs rarely explode as people fear in the early stages.. If you saw anything leaking or smelled anything funky I would be quicker to discard.. But I always wait a while and hope : ) But Thats just me

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan
If you don't have much candling experience, wait until day 10. And even then leave anything you are not Sure about in the incubator. Recandle on day 18.
