I have never raised chickens before but have had lots of birds in my life. I even used to rehab wild birds. My sister and brother in law used to raise chickens a while back so I am somewhat familiar with the basics at least. I have also been doing a lot of research over the last year or so in preparation.
I do not have chickens yet. I am 60 and planning on retiring in April 2021. I hope to build my own coop and run once I get my backyard cleaned and prepared.
One of the many topics in my research has been finding the best breeds for hot climates since I live in the desert of southern Arizona. Summer heat can be brutal here. This past summer we had 101 days at 100 or higher. The winters are pretty mild though.
I loved getting to know my sister’s chickens. They all had different personalities and eccentricities. I hope to raise my future chickens from eggs or chicks so they get to know me as I get to know them. Also, I like the taste of absolutely fresh eggs. They are so superior to store bought.
I don’t have a lot of time for hobbies just now though I do enjoy a bit of gardening, reading and just puttering around my home. I was able to volunteered for over 10 years at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum but had to quit so I could go back to school and finish my bachelors degree. I hope to go back and volunteer there again after I retire.
I live with quite a few cats, most of whom were dumped when their previous owners moved, two Midland Painted Turtles who are over 35 years old, a 10 year old fancy pigeon who has nerve damage & can’t fly and a fairly large land hermit crab. I am the person who takes in the animals when they are no longer wanted. To support my unusual family I am a Biology and Geology specialist at a community college were I have worked for almost 30 years. I was born and raised in the Sonoran desert, which I love. My home is very mid-20th century and I don’t have internet or cable. My human family thinks I’m a little bit crazy but I actually enjoy living more simply without all the modern conveniences like dishwashers and microwaves ovens. I only recently got a smart phone so I can do some work from home during the pandemic shut downs.
In the course of my research I came across the BYC forum. I was looking for information on coops and different chicken breeds at the time. I knew I would come back and join but didn’t do so until I was looking up information recently on Ocellated Turkeys. Every time I have read a thread on a topic the information was great and given in a very friendly way. I may not ask a lot of questions at first because I want to spend more time reading through the archives and getting a feel for the forum community. I have never been a member of a forum before and need to get to know the rules.
