I've been lurking and learning for months here Thank you for so much great info. I raised Buff Orpingtons years ago but haven't had any chickens for years till about 4 months ago
I found that many ways of doings things have become obsolete with the better ways shared here.
I now have the following:
4 Barnevelders. I hatched them 2 months ago I think their all pullets
4 light Sussex these honk like a goose when excited. About a month from laying
2 (a pair) of golden seabrights
1- golden laced Wyandot
1- silver laced Wyandot
4 - black copper Marans (including Cosmo, my boss Rooster)
My last 2 acquisitions, last night, a chocolate Americana and A silver easter egger. If all works I'll be able to show my grand babies green and blue eggs along with my assortment of brown shades.
And last but not least , 12 Welsummer eggs are in my home built auto turning incubator and will go into lockdown tomorrow night
Wish me luck. I had 9 that a super Coon got to a month ago ( May he rest in peace)
I hope most of these will get to grow up

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. I'm sorry about the loss to the coon, but glad you took care of it. Wow, you are a long way up in Idaho. I've visited Idaho once, and it is a beautiful state. Have you ever visited or gotten chickens from Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell, ID? I've ordered chicks several times from Dunlap and it is a wonderful, family run hatchery that has great birds and service. The folks at Dunlap are very helpful and friendly, and I've never lost a chick in shipping. I can't say that about any of the 3 larger hatcheries that I've ordered from. I bought, swapped and bartered for my flock locally , it doesn't surprise me your happy with your Idaho purchase. This is a state with an abundance of wonderful people living in it. About the coon, I had a rough time with him. He ripped the wire off the side of a chicken tractor to wipe out my wellies. He pulled the chain link out on a dog kennel popping the ties to the cross bars till he got in and killed 6 red stars adult hens a neighbor had given me. We tend to solve our own problems, and that was certainly not one I was going to pass on to someone else

So glad you could join our community! Sounds like you have a nice flock. Sorry about the coon attack. They are just terrible. Never use chicken wire on any external parts of the coop or run as coons can rip right through the stuff. Hardware cloth is the only way to go.

Chain link works well if you put a 2 foot run of chicken wire around the.base to keep chicks from wandering through the holes

Sounds like you have some beautiful breeds to work with.
